Teaching Methods

Faculty  stresses the application of management theory to managerial decision-making and problem-solving, using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, case studies, team projects, consulting projects with external organizations, group discussions, simulations, student presentations and independent studies.

A high degree of student faculty interaction is our norm. Stress is placed on the development of a close relationship between faculty and students. Faculty is available to students in and out of class and participates with students in co-curricular activities.

The development of a collegial environment within the student community is an important part of the learning experience. Since students take the core curriculum as a group, friendships and study teams develop through which the students become well acquainted with each other. The academic environment balances cooperation with strong individual effort. It is expected that the students will excel as individuals and as members of a team and will receive national, regional and local awards for the quality of their work.

The teachers report each term on students’ attendance, work in class and written work submitted for the class. These contribute to the final grade of the student. Work submitted during the course has bearing on whether or not the student will be allowed to continue in the course and to take the final examination.

Lecturers assume that students would read extensively, make notes on their own and attend lectures regularly. The teaching timetable might not look like all that many hours a week, but associated reading and the writing of essays, reports, projects and other course work assignments make up a full working week.

IoBM seeks to maintain high standards of teaching in a number of ways. All proposals for new courses are considered in detail by the curriculum sub-committee of the Board of Studies. The students’ views and experiences are taken into account in academic program development. An external examiner system is in operation to evaluate the quality of courses. The Institute also reviews its programs in the light of academic developments, professional entrance requirements, examination results and the career of the IoBM’s alumni.
