How Business Schools can create an impact

Institute of Business Management (IoBM) in collaboration with the Association of Management Development Institutions in Pakistan (AMDIP) organized IoBM – AMDIP Faculty Colloquium (IAFC-2017) at the IoBM Campus on September 20-21, 2017. The theme of the IAFC-2017 was “How Business Schools Can Create an Impact”. The objective of the Colloquium was to enable faculty to share experience in innovative teaching and faculty engagements by inviting faculty and research students from universities to present concerned research papers, thoughts, and visions. Invited were Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad, Chairman ILM Trust, Chairman NBEAC, HEC (Chief Guest) and Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector Lahore School of Economics and Chairperson AMDIP (Keynote Speaker). Mr. Talib S. Karim, President IoBM and Chairperson, AMDIP Karachi Chapter, delivered the Welcome Address. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Dean CBM and CES, IoBM made the opening remarks. Invited as Chief Guest on day two of the IAFC-2017 was Dr. Nisar A. Siddique, VC IBA Sukkur and Chairperson AMDIP, Sukkur Chapter. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder delivered the note of thanks at the conclusion of this Colloquium. Ms. Shagufta Ghouri, Assistant Professor, IoBM, was the Colloquium Manager for IoBM. Ms. Memoona Zareen, Secretary AMDIP, was the Colloquium Manager for AMDIP.

Mr. Talib Karim welcomed participants and said CBM-turned-IoBM was the first institution in the then remote Korangi Creek becoming a trendsetter for schools, universities and professional colleges making this area a hub of infrastructural, academic and professional activity. He added student career trends at IoBM, besides working for multinationals, are now focused on entrepreneurship too. He attached due importance to discipline and decorum and that how instrumental are faculty and parents towards positive thinking among students. Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad highlighted the value of mission (core objectives), vision (future positioning), ethics, morals and strategic advantage towards professional excellence. He viewed the figure of a faculty as the soul, spirit, heart and mind of an institution and termed teachers of leaders as greater than leaders. Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry said the vision of our business school encompasses vision of our society, our country and the world. He said research in business education, internal governance mechanism, faculty responsibility, training, development and empowerment are the hallmarks of a good business school. Earlier, Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder presented on the topic “Changing the focus from Inputs to Impact: RBM Framework for evaluating HEC Ranking Criteria” covering such aspects as HEC’s Focus on Impact Factor to Impact: HEC Ranking Criteria, Result-based Management Framework; RBM Classification of HEC Criteria: Quality Assurance, Teaching Quality, Research and Development, Finance and Facilities, Society Integration and Community Development.

This Faculty Colloquium was envisioned as a platform for addressing demands and challenges of the business environment and higher education. In an environment of increasing complexity and accountability, it is important that business schools focus on the appropriate inputs of human, financial and physical aspects. In this regard, business schools are encouraged to integrate learning into their curriculum management processes and make intellectual contributions to have a positive impact on business theory, teaching, and practice. Moreover, this impact also has a broader meaning as through the articulation and execution of its mission business school should make a difference in the society. Presentation and Panel Discussions at IAFC 2017 gauged the impacts made through Industry/Societal Leadership, Alumni, Research, Students, Executive Training and Faculty Consultancy. The presentations, panels discussions and workshops helped faculty and students grasp on the latest trends in the evolving business environment at national and international levels, in higher education and in research whereby allowing them a path to pursue research in their respective fields.
