BIG DATA ANALYTICS ENHANCING QUALITY OF EDUCATION

The Entrepreneurship and Management Excellence Center (EMEC), IoBM organized a brainstorming workshop on “Using Big Data Analytics in Enhancing Quality of Education” on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. While the focal person of the workshop was Mr. Mehboob Karim, Mr. Talib Karim, Rector, IoBM, made the opening remarks. Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director, Administration, Admission and Finance was present on this occasion with her pertinent and practical ideas and insights on the effective use of Big Data Analytics.

Meanwhile, two presentations were made during this session: Mr. Muhammad Moin Uddin Ali Khan, Senior Fellow and HoD, Supply Chain and Logistics Management, IoBM spoke on “Big Data Analytics: Introduction, Opportunities and challenges”. Mr. Asim Farooq, HoD, Information Technology, IoBM delivered his presentation on “Big Data for IoBM.”

The purpose of this workshop was to develop a consensus on an institutional framework for exploring the use of Big Data in enhancing quality of education and outlining future directions relating to the institutionalization of Big Data Analytics at IoBM. Attending this workshop were HoDs, managers and assistant managers from IoBM’s various departments: Admissions, Academics, Registration, Human Resource, Finance, Internship and Placement, Maintenance, Internal Audit, Information Technology, Creek College and Public Relations.

While delivering the inaugural address, Mr. Talib Karim was confident that big data will help IoBM profile its students along with finding how many students are availing financial assistance, the number of students dropping out in each semester, the number of students from rural Sindh studying at IoBM, how many students from each area of Karachi are studying at IoBM. Moreover, he viewed IoBM’s Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) and the IT Department as playing important role for collecting, analyzing and presenting such big data. Furthermore, Mr. Talib Karim emphasized how big data assists in taking rational decisions within each department and how it will help IoBM enhance student and faculty satisfaction.

While sharing his views, Mr. Mehboob Karim said that Founder President, IoBM, Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim was very much involved in this initiative of gathering and analyzing big data. Mr. Mehboob highlighted that using insights collected from big data will facilitate IoBM executives to help employees become successful while faculty will facilitate students accomplish their academic and extracurricular objectives. Mr. Mehboob highlighted the importance of developing and implementing the Campus on Cloud management solution at IoBM with proper and effective tools to monitor, analyze and manage various operations.

Following these presentations, Mr. Mehboob Karim initiated a brainstorming session during which all participants presented key tools and items that should be placed on their Campus on Cloud dashboard to inform them of big data analytics pertaining to their department. He believed and reiterated that the workshop proceedings and confessions need to go beyond the talking stage to positive and result-oriented implementation of the Big Data and its applications through constant follow-up and feedback which he will be closely monitored.
