IoBM’s vision and mission of “life-long learning” highlighted

A faculty meeting for Fall Semester 2017 was convened at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 in the IoBM Auditorium.

It began with Dua in memory of our beloved President, Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim. Invited to this orientation were all Academic HoDs and Permanent Faculty Members along with representation from such departments as Administration, Deans, Economics, OGS and Research, Alumni, Placements and International Cooperation, IT, Public Relations, Library, Examination and Security.  Seated on dais were President Mr. Talib Karim, Dr. Ejaz Ahmed, Dean CCSIS, Dr.  Syed Irfan Hyder, Dean CBM and CES, Dr. Shahida Wizarat, Dean CESD and  Head of Economics Department, Director Research and Chief Editor PBR Journal and Prof. Dr. Amanat A. Jalbani, Adviser to President and Head of OGS and Research.

Mr. Talib Karim emphasized the need for strengthening our faculty and said that the future to stay in the academia lies in the acquisition of PhD degree. He said while we encourage MPhil leading to PhD, we need to follow the current trend of MBA going directly to the PhD program. The major concern of HEC, according to Mr. Talib Karim, is gauging the number of PhDs a university has among its faculty. He added that IoBM would soon have its fourth PhD as three of its student-turned-faculty has already been awarded their PhD.

He maintained, however, that academic excellence through recruiting PhDs may be complimented to hire ideal candidates with pertinent corporate experience as faculty. This would enable us to move closer to our cherished objective of acquiring AACSB accreditation. He underlined the importance of faculty setting personal examples in mentorship and to be role models in promoting respect for each other in order to address politics and bickering among peers and colleagues on campus. It is also to be realized that traditional methodologies in teaching need to be replaced with technology-oriented ways and means of education. Mr. Talib Karim said that more responsibilities would now be rested with Deans who would delegate the same to HoDs accordingly.

Earlier Dr. Ejaz Ahmed stressed upon the need to follow the mission and vision of IoBM, to take teaching of Mathematics seriously, to maintain class discipline, to foster academic research, to have access to HEC database, to generate new ideas and insights through training, to have course outline and teaching methodology in order and to own or have sense of belonging to the institute.

Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder focused on creating an environment for life-long learning, to make  students passionate in what they are studying, to have faculty blogs for guiding, mentoring and inspiring students, to inculcate the habit of reading and writing beyond textbooks towards academic and professional excellence and never to lose sight or focus of our mission and vision of purposeful education through life-long learning and seeing IoBM among the top institutions home and abroad.

Dr. Shahida Wizarat urged upon the faculty for meticulous course outlines, curriculum vitae and teaching plan all set at the threshold of the new semester. She highlighted the importance of faculty setting examples of and adhering to attendance, punctuality and regularity themselves. Curriculum review, according to Dr. Shahida Wizarat, remains of utmost significance in view of the state-of-the-art teaching and research. The first CESD faculty orientation will take place in second week of September and travel grants committee will meet monthly to address concerned issues.

Dr. Jalbani, who has recently been inducted in the Review Committee of the HEC for MS and PhD programs, felt that after visiting a number of universities in the Punjab and Islamabad, he believes IoBM has the best to offer in terms of the state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities and the promise and potential towards academic and professional excellence. All that is needed is to systematize procedures and documentation of records in order to achieve our cherished vision and mission as mentioned. Dr. Jalbani heads Office of the Graduate Studies at IoBM and keenly looks forward to faculty and management to collaborate in achieving desired results. He also heads Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) at IoBM segments of which are envisioned as EMEC and concerned training, conferences, case studies and projects.
