The Electrical Engineering Department of College of Engineering Sciences (CES) at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) is holding a conference on Multidisciplinary Engineering Research & Technology: Harnessing the Power of R&D, on its Campus at Karachi, on March 06, 2017. The purpose of the conference is to encourage young engineers in engineering and other science and technologies to commercialize their research finding. Commercialization of research and transfer of technical information and knowledge is considered a prime example for generating academic impact because it constitutes immediate, measurable market acceptance for outputs of academic research. Many universities worldwide have taken action to foster links with knowledge users and in facilitating transfer of technology. Transfer of technology involves capacity building both at the professional and institutional level. Universities and centers of higher learning have a key role to educate large population, generate knowledge, and inculcate commercial and entrepreneurship programs with the Industry.
Academic engagement represents an important way in which academic knowledge is transferred into the industrial domain. Amongst the various channels available for establishing these links, the commercialization of academic knowledge, involves patenting and licensing of inventions as well as academic entrepreneurship. To support commercialization, Academia in Pakistan have established specialized structures, such as Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), research incubators and supportive internal rules and procedures.

Present at the Conference were Mr. Talib Karim, Rector IoBM; Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Dean CBM and Ms. Seema Ansari, Head of Electrical Engineering Department, IoBM. The Conference was largely attended by students and faculty.
Speakers invited at the Conference to present their research papers were Professor Dr. Javier Poncela, Associate professor at University of Malaga, Spain; Dr. Bilal A. Siddiqui, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, DHA Suffa University; IoBM’s Dr. Muhammad Imran Majid, Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering Department and Dr. Adeel Ansari, Assistant Professor, Computer Science and MIS Department. At the conclusion of the Conference, Mr. Talib Karim presented mementos among the guests and participants while Ms. Seema Ansari delivered the vote of thanks.

About the Speaker
Dr. Javier Poncela received the M.Sc. degree in telecommunication engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 1994 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Málaga, Spain. He worked in Alcatel Spacio before joining the University of Málaga at the Communication Engineering Department.
He has actively collaborated with multinational companies (Nokia, AT4wireless, Ingenia) on formal modeling and system testing in Bluetooth, UMTS and satellite systems. His research interests include underwater communication systems, methodologies for efficient development of complex communications systems and analysis of QoS over heterogeneous networks and systems and models for the evaluation of QoE.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Bilal Siddiqui has a multidisciplinary academic background in academics and has a versatile research and development experience. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from NED University, being an honors student throughout. He also obtained Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and PhD in Controls Engineering, both from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He is the author of several research articles and patents, as well as the recipient of various awards. He has served at SUPARCO on national projects and as the director of engineering at Saudi Aerospace Technologies. He is currently the deputy head of mechanical engineering department at DHA Suffa University, and a consultant for engineering programs at IoBM.

About the Speaker
Dr. Imran Majid, Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering Department. He has a PhD in Electronics from University of Surrey, UK, MSc in Space Engineering from Umea University, Sweden and BSc in Electrical Engineering from UET Lahore. He was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship towards his PhD in Frequency Planning for Clustered Cellular Multiple Access Channel at the prestigious Centre for Communication Systems Research (now 5G Innovation Centre), University of Surrey, UK. After his PhD, Imran consulted and later worked at University of Toronto Canada as Optics Team Lead for two of Canada’s most advanced remote sensing satellites, NEMO-AM and NEMO-HD. He is also currently involved with Ontario Centre of Excellence as Technical Reviewer.

Dr. Adeel Ansari holds a PhD in Information Technology, from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He has done his BSc (Hons) in Computing with First Class Honors from Staffordshire University, in the United Kingdom, Masters in Business Administration in Management Information Sciences and MS in Software Engineering from Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology, Karachi Pakistan. He holds a diverse work experience, from a Software engineer at Siemens Pakistan for one year, as an Assistant Quality Assurance Manager for two years (for Consumer Credit Card products) and Assistant Policy Manager (for Consumer Personal Loan products) at Habib Bank Limited. He has worked as an Associate Consultant in the IT Assurance and Advisory at A. F. Ferguson & Co, a member firm of Price Waterhouse Coopers, UK. He has taught programming languages and software development related subjects for three years at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He has also presented research papers at various International and national conferences and also has publications in high impact factor, IEEE and Springer journals. His area of expertise in teaching are, programming languages, web & software development, computer simulation, automata theory and mathematics. His research interests include Seabed logging, methodologies for efficient development of complex algorithms and analysis and simulations in Software Engineering.
